Housing expenses included in our calculation

The housing expenses we include when calculating your housing allowance depend on whether or not you own your home.

Rental property (including kårbolig – the home of retired farmers on a farm)

  • rent
  • for people receiving a retirement pension, disability pension or survivor’s pension whose heating expenses are not covered by their rent, NOK 6,336 per year is added to cover their heating expenses

Homes with shared costs (flats in housing cooperatives, jointly-owned properties and housing companies, as well as leasehold flats)

  • shared costs
  • mortgage interest and capital repayments – only the portion of the loan that relates to the home purchase or necessary repairs to the home
  • for people receiving a retirement pension, disability pension or survivor’s pension whose heating expenses are not covered by their shared costs, NOK 6,336 per year is added to cover their heating expenses

Homes without shared costs (houses)

  • mortgage interest and capital repayments – only the portion of the loan that relates to the home purchase or necessary repairs to the home
  • any property taxes and ground rent
  • fixed amount of NOK 12,672 to cover running external maintenance and property insurance
  • municipal taxes – calculated automatically based on the information entered in the housing allowance computer systems by your municipality
  • for people receiving a retirement pension, disability pension or survivor’s pension whose heating expenses are not covered by their shared costs, NOK 6,336 per year is added to cover their heating expenses
